Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

How to use affirmations to believe in yourself

How you speak to yourself is just as important to living a healthy lifestyle as eating the right foods and exercising. By speaking confidently, you raise your self esteem and have a better chance of reaching your goals. It’s easy to let negative thought patterns be a distraction to living your happiest life. Everyone experiences them from time to time, but when you find you’re truly stuck, you can use affirmations to get you back on the road to success.

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are short phrases you repeat to yourself, that shift your thinking. When you’re feeling down, sad, upset, angry, scared, or any other “negative” emotion, reciting an affirmation can reframe your thoughts around the situation you’re experiencing. To reframe something means to shift the way you think about it. Yes, it’s that easy. If you can change your point of view then you can change how you react in any given situation.

Your thoughts carry a vibration, and how you speak to yourself will directly affect how you feel- physically and mentally. For example, think about a time when you had a heated discussion or a fight with someone. What were the words that you used? What did you experience in your body? In fact, just by thinking about the things you said then will cause the same feelings in your body now, as if you were in that moment.

Now, focus on a time when you were really happy. What was happening around you? What words would you use to describe that situation? There’s probably a smile on your face now and you didn’t even realize it.

Words have power. We can use them to our benefit or they can destroy our progress.

When you use affirmations for positive living, you shift the vibration and begin to regain control in feeling the best way you can.

How to use affirmations

  1. Keep it up lifting. You won’t be able to live a happy life while saying negative things.
  2. Be confident. As you say your affirmations, feel confident and joyful that you will succeed. Sit up tall or stand with your hands on your hips. Say it out loud! Declare victory!
  3. Keep it real with yourself. It’s ok to have grand wishes and desires, but affirming something that may be way beyond your reach (right now) only sets you up for disappointment. Instead, aim for small, reasonable shifts, then as you progress in life, progress in your affirmations.
  4. Repeat your affirmation at least 3 times. When we’re in stressful situations, repeating your affirmation will engrain the thought into your consciousness. This gives you the power to see the outcome, making it more believable.
  5. Use an affirmation during meditation- Mantra is a popular style of meditation where you repeat a sacred word over and over again, while focusing intently on the outcome. There’s no reason why you can’t use an affirmation during meditation.
  6. Be creative! “I am” is a very common start to an affirmation but speak to yourself in a way that works for you. You could recite a short sentence, instead of a few words. It’s all up to you.
  7. Practice practice practice. Transformation is not a quick and easy process. Say your affirmations morning, afternoon and evening.

Benefits

One of the first things you’ll notice from practicing affirmations is how you react to situations. When things get tough we think that life is “happening” to us; that some outside force caused a certain incident. We become reactive, instead of thoughtful. Using affirmations helps you regain control over yourself. You can choose to react in a way that works for you, or in a way that doesn’t. By reframing a situation, you’re essential putting you back in the driver’s seat.

Small changes lead to big changes

Reciting positive affirmations will bring change. Some things may change right away while others may take some time. Regardless, as you experience your life changing, you will feel more confident that the power to manage your situation is within your grasp. Now you’ve learned to be your own support system. It’s important to connect with others to feel fulfilled, but that starts with connecting to yourself. Empower yourself by believing in yourself. This is how change happens.

You can pick apart any of these outcomes and know that your circumstances will change for the better. But when you put them all together, they equal freedom! Freedom from the cumbersome thought processes keeping you stuck in the same old patterns.

A word of caution!

You have to be willing to do the work. You can’t just throw some words out there and expect something magical to happen. It’s up to you to become aware of your part in shifting your life: taking responsibility for yourself and your actions is the first step to making lasting, positive change.
